According to the adsorption theory, the physical adsorption strength is inversely proportional to the sixth power of distance, so the coating should have sufficient infiltration with the base material to form a good film adhesion. The infiltration occurs on the contact surface and is related to the different cohesion energy and surface tension between different objects. The smaller the contact angle is, the more fully the coating and the base material can infiltrate and produce good adhesion. Usually, the surface tension of clean steel surface is higher than that of any coating, so it can be better wetted by the coating. When some oil and grease are attached to the substrate, these contaminants will make the surface tension very low, so that the coating can not wet the substrate sufficiently, resulting in poor adhesion, and the consequences will cause the whole film to fall off or produce various appearance defects, so the contaminants on the surface of the substrate must be thoroughly removed before painting.
