Handbrushable Polyurea

What Is Handbrushable Polyurea

The most common polyurea we know is spray polyurea. But as the development of polyurea technology, spray polyurea cannot meet all the different applications, especially in small area, repairing work, or where it's not convenient to bring a big spray machine.
So that the chemist also developed handbrushable polyurea, such as single component handbrushable polyurea, two component handbrushable polyurea, and polyaspartic polyurea.
These formulations use low activity system, which reduced the reaction time of isocyanate and resin a lot, so that can allow to apply by hand.

What Is the Category of Brushable Polyurea

According to the reaction method, there is single component brushable polyurea, and two components brushable polyurea.

Both single component brushable polyurea and two components brushable polyurea can be transparent, while spray polyurea cannot, so we can use this kind of material to do waterproofing on wood, ceramic or anywhere we don't wat to change the original color of the substate.

Single component brushable polyurea is isocyanate react with special amine terminated hardener, which need the moisture to participate in the reaction.

The advantage of single component brushable polyurea is that it can be used directly without weight or mixing, but the disadvantage is that it's usually has little solvent inside, in order to make the viscosity lower.

And because of the reaction method, we should better used single component polyurea as soon as possible once we open it.

There is also aromatic single component polyurea and aliphatic single component polyurea, the difference is the aliphatic is color stable when exposure to the UV, and the cure time of aliphatic single component brushale polyurea is slower than aromatic single component.

Two components brushable polyurea is low activity isocyanate react with amine terminated polyether, there are also aromatic and aliphatic brushable polyurea (polyaspartic polyurea).

The reaction time of two components aromatic polyurea is quicker than two components aliphatic brushable polyurea (polyaspartic polyurea), so that polyaspartic polyurea is much easier to operation.

Two components brushable polyurea is easy to be stored, and it's allowed to add pigment by customers, by adding pigment into the B side.

The advantage of two components polyurea is that it's usually solvent free, which is environment friendly, but the disadvantage is that we need to weight and mixed before use, so that the operation skill will influence on the properties of the materials.

Brushable Polyurea Coating

Polyurea Description

The polyurea is a synthetic polymer obtained from the reaction of a diamine with a diisocyanate, polymerization reaction is very similar to polyurethane one, but in case of polyurea, resulting link is a "urea", so it is called polyurea.

By this link we get from generating molecular structure an insensitivity to moisture, thus making the polyurea (if pure) the best waterproof membrane. It is known for its rapid curing time and high strength, making it useful in a variety of industrial and commercial applications, such as construction waterproofing, coatings for truck beds, industrial flooring, and tank linings. Additionally, it can be used as a sealant and insulation material.

Polyurea is a waterproofing material that is often used in industrial and commercial settings to protect surfaces from water damage. It is applied as a liquid coating, which then quickly cures to form a durable, waterproof barrier. This can be used for waterproofing roofs, foundations, decks, and other surfaces. Also used to seal concrete structures, such as swimming pools, water tanks and retaining walls. Polyurea is known for its excellent resistance to water, chemicals, abrasion and impact, which makes it an ideal option for waterproofing surfaces that are exposed to harsh conditions.

We say "pure" because in the market there are numerous polyurea-called "hybrid", which are a mixture between polyurea and polyurethane. These membranes do not have the same mechanical properties as the pure polyurea.

What Is the Difference Between Spray Polyurea and Brushable Polyurea

The reaction of spray polyurea is very fast, it's usually within serval seconds, so that it can only apply with special high pressure and high temperature machine.

And because of the reaction method of the machine, which we called "impingement reaction" , even we didn't add pigment into the B side, spray polyurea cannot be transparent, because there are so many tiny little bubbles inside the coatings.

But if we don't add pigment into brushable polyurea, it can be transparent, so that we can use for where a clear waterproofing coating is needed.

We also cannot get a smooth surface by spraying polyurea for big area, because the fog goes everywhere will make particles, but we can get smooth surface by applying hand braushable polyurea, because it's low reaction and has time for levelling.

The advantage of fast reaction spray polyurea is that it can be sprayed on vertical surface without sagging.

By the formulation design, the brushable polyurea can get similar or even better physical property as spray polyurea, but because of the low reaction, it cannot apply thick thickness in one path, so it's low efficient compared to spray polyurea.

But we cannot bring a big spray machine to everywhere, so that for small area waterproofing, such as a small roof, or repairing job, or field area where don't have electricity, hand brushable polyurea is very good to use.

The Pros of Polyurea Coating

Waterproofing

Polyurea forms a seamless, leak-free membrane capable of withstanding permanent ponding water conditions. The polyureas used in commercial roofing are also used in many water containment applications such as reservoirs, pipelines, and wastewater treatment tanks, among others.

01

Durability

Polyurea-based coating systems are incredibly durable and flexible. They possess exceptional elongation and tensile strength, making them ideal for commercial roofing and surface/floor coating applications. They also exhibit excellent chemical, corrosion, and abrasion resistance.

Your Guide to Using Polyurea Coatings

Polyurea coatings are often chosen for surfaces because they feature characteristics that roofs, floors, and other areas need but don't have as part of their own construction. With that said, it is easy to apply a coating to supplement a surface and make it last as long as possible.
Here are some characteristics of polyurea coatings that make them suitable for usage on so many different surfaces:
● Waterproof: These coatings provide an effective barrier against water which makes them appropriate for applications that require waterproofing.
● Flexible: They are also known for having great flexibility, which means that when polyurea coatings are applied to surfaces, they are able to withstand movement and abrasive elements without cracking.
● Durable: Polyurea coatings protect surfaces from wear and tear since they are resistant to impact, chemicals, and other environmental factors that could damage a surface.
● Versatile: With the ability to adhere to and create a bond with a variety of surfaces, these coatings work well when applied to concrete, wood, metal, and more.
● Quick-drying: Since polyurea coatings cure in only seconds or minutes, they allow for fast applications and reduced downtime.
● UV resistant: Some polyurea coatings are able to resist UV light which leads to a stronger hold and reduced color fading when exposed to sunlight.

The Process for Applying Polyurea Coating

When you're ready to begin using polyurea coatings in a facility, you'll want to take the following steps:
1. Inspect – Start by inspecting your surface and identify if there are any preexisting coatings present. Take note of any cracks or defects as well and be sure to notify the property owner of any major structural issues that need to be addressed.

2. Clean – Once you have noted any defects and cracks, it is time to start cleaning the surface. Try to get rid of any dirt, dust, grease, wax, or anything else that will prevent a smooth coating job. Use a scrubber or power washer if necessary.

3. Repair – After the surface is clean, you will want to repair the cracks found from step one. Make sure that any repairs conducted are smooth and level.

4. Remove – Use methods like sanding, grinding, blasting, and more to remove any old coatings or paint from the surface.

5. Clean again – Clean up any debris from the preparation work to ensure a smooth application.

6. Prepare – Prepare the area by adding tape and plastic to materials that should not receive the polyurea coating.

7. Mix – Start mixing the polyurea components, following the guide for instructions. Then, spread the polyurea coating using your equipment for a smooth application.
Once you apply the coating, be sure to allow for proper curing time and examine to ensure uniform coating so you can identify any areas which may need fixing later on.

How Are Brushable Polyurea Made

Brushable polyurea based on slow reactive process was prepared by simple, mild and solvent-free method. Firstly, polyurethane prepolymer was synthesized from poly (propylene carbonate) diol (PPCD, copolymer of propylene oxide/CO2) and 4,4′-dicylocyhexylmethane diisocyanate (HMDI). Polyurethane-urea (PPCD–PUU) was then obtained by the chain extension of prepolymer with polyaspartic ester (PAE). The mechanical properties of PPCD–PUU were optimized by adjusting the content of –NCO in the prepolymer and the ratio of prepolymer to PAE. The mechanical strength, thermal resistance, solvent resistance and hydrolysis resistance of PPCD–PUU were compared with those of PUUs derived from polypropylene glycol and poly-caprolactone diol. The results showed that the comprehensive mechanical properties of PPCD–PUU were balanced when the R value was 1.15 and the content of –NCO was 8 %. The tensile strength was 20.5 MPa, the elongation at break was 352 %, and the Young's modulus was 168.2 MPa. Especially, after soaking in 10 % H2SO4 aqueous solution, 10 % NaOH aqueous solution and 10 % NaCl aqueous solution for 24 h, the tensile properties were basically unchanged. Manual applied polyurethane-urea based on commercial PPCD has broad application prospects because it avoids the use of expensive spraying equipment.

FAQ

Q: What are the benefits of polyurea coating?

A: Polyurea is withstands high abrasion, impacts, and extreme mechanical stress. It has an excellent protection against mechanical impacts, minimizing damages to the anticorrosive paint system and underneath, securing corrosion protection.

Q: What are the two types of polyurea?

A: Depending on polyurea chemical structure, it could be of two types: aliphatic or aromatic.

Q: Is polyurea worth the money?

A: While polyurea can cost more, you are paying for its durability and longevity which clearly is a better investment.

Q: Can polyurea be applied with a brush?

A: It can be hand applied using close nap rollers; brushes; rakes or even airless sprayers. The aspartic systems are not the high build coating typical of the "hot spray" polyurea systems.

Q: What is the application of polyurea coating?

A: One of polyurea's main application fields is waterproofing of roofs, terraces, bridges, tunnels, tanks, swimming pools, etc. Polyurea provides exceptional waterproofing performance, along with extraordinary mechanical strength and chemical resistance, namely the main criteria for a wide range of projects.

Q: Can you roll on polyurea?

A: Roll-applied polyureas are often used as an intermediate coating for waterproofing and areas requiring a flat finish. Castable polyureas also have a longer gel time, allowing the coating to flow and fill the voids and bug holes.

Q: When applying polyurethane do you use a brush or foam?

A: But when it comes to applying a smooth coat of clear finish, such as polyurethane, a foam brush is not my first choice. Instead of bristles, it has a blade. The blunt sides leave two parallel ridges of finish, like a snowplow on the highway. Also, the foam head contains air, which can leave bubbles in your finish.

Q: Why is polyurea so expensive?

A: First, they are simply higher-quality products. They are more durable and offer better protection than epoxy does. Additionally, they cure faster than epoxy and can be applied in colder temperatures. This makes them more convenient to use, which also contributes to the higher cost.

Q: Does polyurea need a primer?

A: A coating system consists of multiple elements: surface preparation, primers to increase the chemical & mechanical bond, and the right polyurea product. Each element is equally important but choosing the right primer will make a world of difference for long-term adhesion.

Q: Is polyurea stronger than epoxy?

A: Our comparison of polyurea vs epoxy has shown that there is a clear winner. Polyurea can be installed year-round and it is up to 20 times stronger than epoxy. It's moisture-resistant, impervious to most chemicals, and will not go yellow from UV exposure.

Q: How many coats of polyurea?

A: Appropriate System Used. A two-coat system is fine for residential use. A 3 coat system is better for high use or shop applications. A full broadcast system is the most ' bulletproof' floor you can buy.

Q: How long does polyurea take to dry?

A: In polyurea coatings, you can walk on the surface 4 to 8 hours after the professionals apply it, and you can drive vehicles over it 24 hours after the application.

Q: How long does polyurea last?

A: Because polyurea is more durable than epoxy, it has a life expectancy of about 15 years. This product is meant to last you a lifetime. So looking at it all together, polyurea will last you at least a decade more than epoxy.

Q: Does polyurea get hot in the sun?

A: Polyurea is 100% UV stable and works great on outdoor surfaces. It won't fade or discolor in the sun. Polyurea does not get hot to the touch which means it won't burn feet on pool decks or patios.

Q: Can polyurea get wet?

A: In polyurea, synthetic resin and reactive isocyanate materials are combined to create a coating compound. It ultimately produces a durable, flexible compound that prevents corrosion, resists erosion over time, is impact resistant, and has waterproof properties.

Q: How do you maintain polyurea coating?

A: For a vast majority of people, there will be no need to undergo preventive maintenance for a polyurea concrete coating. If you want however you can do the following 2 things. First, don't leave chemicals standing on top of your coating. Second, regularly clean your coating by wiping away debris or standing water.

Q: What is the difference between polyurethane and polyurea?

A: Polyurea and polyurethane are valuable coating and lining compounds for many industries. While polyurethane coatings are affordable and offer UV resistance, they are more susceptible to damage in humid or freezing environments. Polyurea resists extreme conditions and cures incredibly fast but can be more expensive.

Q: Does polyurea bond to concrete?

A: Other benefits of a polyurea polyaspartic floor coating include: 100% UV stable (no more yellowing!) Coating penetrates into the concrete for a strong bond.

Q: Can polyurea be used on driveways?

A: The short answer is yes — you can seal a driveway with polyurea. In fact, polyurea is one of the only options for outdoor concrete coating, and we've found it to be the best choice for driveways. Polyurea withstands the elements as well as tire skids, and it looks beautiful when installed by professionals.

Q: Is polyurea garage floor worth it?

A: Polyurea is incredibly durable and resilient. It resists damage from chemicals, abrasions, impacts, and fluctuations in temperature. This strength makes it ideal for a garage environment where heavy machinery, vehicles, tools, and various substances might cause wear and tear.
